  1. 100% agree with @peterB ...

At the begining of your trading career, one screen is more than enough as you still need to start the learning curve with hotkeys and the platform + the chart reading + pattern recognition + L2 reading + etc

Whenever you start doing some more practice, you can jump into a setup of 2 monitors or just 1 bigger one. It all depends on many things and IMHO is too personal to decide based in anyone else experience.

I totally disagree with the idea of having 4 screen at the same time. Too much info. Only "professionals" with +5 or +10 years of experience will manage that amount of information properly. Most of the cases, they will do more wrong than good.

-I plan on getting a 24" monitor to start, and then add as I need and advance in my trading career, is this sufficicent for now or should I just buy  a 27" or 32" now?

Hi @greg g ... I agree with some of the comments that you already got ... screen space is the only concern to be explored before getting a laptop for trading. As @peterB mentioned, those specs are above requirements and you won't have troubles with any software platform (DAS or TWS) however you have to take into considerations some caveats : laptops expansion posts (USB, HDMI, etc) are fixed and limited and you wanna add some more screens in the future for a triple screen setup which is very common you might have very limited options via extension ports. On the other hand, a laptop will get you a trading station that can be used everywhere if you travel a lot.

Thinks I'd take into consideration going all-in with a portable trading station : a good base, USB keyboard and USB mouse for best ergonomics

    Super cheat ikea base:  https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/braeda-laptop-support-black-60150176/

Screens : I've got 3x 24" Dell u2500 series (res 1920x1200) and I totally regret my decision. Now, after 3 years, I'd better get 3x 27" FHD 1920x1080 which are pretty inexpensive and common. Check this one as an example

    HP 27 Inch FHD 1080p IPS LED Anti-Glare Monitor : https://www.amazon.ca/New_HP-1080p-Anti-Glare-Monitor-FreeSync/dp/B097SMZBSN/ref=sr_1_5

Extra Connections : you will need to expand your ports if you want to connect more than 1 external screen via expansion ports or expansion panels. Check this ones

    USB-C to dual HDMI Adapter : https://www.amazon.ca/Adapter-Thunderbolt-DisplayPort-Compatible-Pixelbook/dp/B0899HYCR3/ref=sr_1_15

    Portable Monitor : https://www.amazon.ca/PTVDISPLAY-Portable-Extender-External-Speakers/dp/B09BJX5CDR/ref=sr_1_6

I'd choose the adapter + 2 extra 27" FHD monitors side-by-side with the main laptop screen + base + keyboard + mouse

  3. @Silviu please check the "Trend Trading Webinar" by @Aiman where you will find super dupper cool explanation about how to use daily ATR. Most of the time, a period of 14 is used on the daily chart taking into consideration both premarket and postmarket. Any platform like DAS or TWS will place the numbers for you in the charts just adding the indicator to the daily chart 😉

Apply logic 100% of the time: if the GAP+ the ORB is over 50% of the daily ATR(14) ... would you take a trade that have in the best case scenario only a 40% daily range available to capture ?? I wouldn't

    Saludos,

    Pablo

PS: @Andrew Aziz @Thor if you consider that this video might help others, we might try to translate it into English too 🙂👌

  5. hi  @Stefan Tanev i had this same conversation with another member this week.

TWS has some Global settings that will be applied on every chart by default accesible via File Menu in the main windo...... Global Settings >> Charts >> Settings >> Prior close

Every single chart u open in the platform has override settings via the View Edit Menu >> Chart Properties ... You will also find there a “Prior close” setting that will only change that chart only ...

Double check those 2 and for sure your dashed prev day close level will show up on the chart....

Besides that, @Abiel shared with u a post I update regularly with all the settings, mov avgs, hotkeys, levels etc ... hope that file can help u to setup a starting point with TWS

    Regards,

    Paul

  7. hi @maesterfitch

from what I know, IB does not provide tick-by-tick data ... never .... ever ... not even for their own TWS platform ....

they use a technology called snapshots and they provide 5s updates on the most updated charts and T&S so there is no way to get tick-by-tick from their API.

Also, go to the documentation,  your API queries will be queue if they are above the limitation meaning, that you can only do a certain amount of queries every 15 seconds.

Hope I helped u with some information

  8. @Justin @Alastair remember to activate the DarkReader Plugin on Firefox or Chrome, but I think that now you can use the chat on the right side : just detach it from the main video window to another brower window. The new code provided here will fix the style now.

NOTICE: there are 2 independent browser windows side-by-side... u can fit the size as u wish ...

     Enjoy !

  9. Hi @Justin,

As I told @Alastair a while ago, sadly moving the chat to the right side is not available any more due the new techonology used in the room. The only idea I can provide right now is to dettach the chat to another browser window and manage them at your needs.... We might need to talk to Sebastian in order to move the chat to the right side and I am not totally sure if that is possible with some Javascript code or maybe a modified flex design.

I don't have access to the code nor the tab that you administrators have, however .... what changes do you need ??

    Regards,

    Paul

  10. Due to last updates in the chatroom, the dark conpact theme with icon tabs that I designed stop working .... obviously, no ones fault 🙂 hehehe

I did manage to fix most of the work ... watch pictures attached and download the new CSS style file ... go to the top of the thread in this page to watch how to install this chatroom feature 😉

Enjoy ! any updates and fixed will be posted in the thread in the future.

  11. @True  @Justin i got late "to the party" so I couldn't help at all... here is thing, OBS is not designed on its core to record several screens at a time on different files, but more to switch between different screens or content "on the fly" for no-later-edition porpouse.

I found out that it DOES allow to open multiple instances, so you can set up 2-3 OBS windows to record 2-3 screens at the same time on different files. That will requiere further edition later, however it is doable. You will need for sure 2 or 3 different HDDs on your PC to record that or a fast SSD... second options is the bare minimum, as there will be no moving parts, the files can be writed at the same time with almost no botleneck. However, the most demanding component in the system will be your GPU for sure as it needs to encode 2-3 screens in real time: doable but costy. I've got a proper GPU for video editing (XFX Radeon RX580 Black Ed 8GB) and it is not that expensive. It will cost you between 180 and 240 dollars aprox. I've tested 2 screens recording /encoding in real time and the GPU can manage that. It will manage 3 for sure too. I've got 4 HDD on my machine so I can record every screen on a different physical device, that helps too.

    Setting up

    1. open OBS as many times as screeens you need to record
    2. to go settings OBS settings and select output file on diff devices or an SSD
    3. go to OBS video and select Hardware Encoding (both NVDA and AMD have that on discrete GPUs)

Note : I 'd bother to try it on a laptop unless it is a gaming laptop with a modern discrete GPU and an external USB 3.1 SSD drive

    Aurbano,

U think u could create or guide on a new custom style for theses forum pages ?  White is too bright on eyes.

@Alastair you don't need to build up anything special if you just installed the DarkReader plugin for your browser and activate it in the forum. It will all go easy in the eyes just fine.

    Oh wow, very nice!

I'm currently trying to see if I can move the whole chat to the right side of the screen....

man ! that is too easy to be a problem ... add this 3 lines to the end of the CSS style and use the width attribute to properly adjust the chat to your screen aspect ratio 🙂 Enjoy !

/* move chat to the right */
    #chatAlertsDiv { position:absolute; right:0px; top:0px; width:18%; }
    #presentationHolderDiv.l-cell { position:absolute; left:0px; width:82%; }

This is freaking amazing @aurbano! Just installed it 🙂

I already had Stylus running for other sites. Updating/beautifying things to be more efficient and look better is my jam!

I thought that I was the only one customization maniac around hahahaha I use Stylus a lot to custom my favourites websites when I want them to work better. Check this custom dark theme I wrote for FinViz

wow, interesting, thanks aurbano! I will forward this to the developer of the chat.

Thanks @Andrew Aziz  ... as it happens, I contacted Sebastian on the chat to let him know about this post, and after a long talk, we realized that we now live 30min appart from each other !! we plan to meet as soon as the covid19 restrictions go away 🙂 LOL anything I can do to improve this awesome community !

  16. Hi everybody,

I've been thinking about giving the room my own personal touch as I often found my self during the last few months having difficulties with the small chat and all the messages... Short Story  I aimed for this goals :

    • Giving some more space for the main chat
    • Reduce the tab selection section in the middle of the column so that it does not overflow in several lines
    • Give some clean icons that clearly identify the content while keeping the tooltip
    • Hide the Alert Panel while keeping it accesible using the mouse over it (autohide)
    • Change the font for a readable one with a smaller size as I use to have the chat in a 40" TV

The final result is this ( original colors on the right, darker theme on the left) :

    chat.thumb.jpg.3033aa77ffc66ac2367f428614ea0055.jpg

If interested in getting more room for the main chat, just install Stylus and Darkreader (if you like the dark  theme ) plugins on your browser :

After the easy installation, just go to the top right cornor of your browser and click on the "S" then on the "create new style option" while being in the tab of the chatroom. Copy the CSS text that you can find attached to this post and then paste it in the editor area. Check the name you want to give to this style on the upper left corner and the URL that should be monitored : https://protradingroom.com

Save  the changes and  go back to the  room. If you want to activate the dark theme just go to the DarkReader plugin and manage  your settings ...

    Hope anyone finds this usefull.

    Keep it green !
