Trading SPY with IB as EU citizen

Seems that you are not allowed by default to trade the SPY etf with Interactive Brokers if you are an EU citizen. Anyone in a similar situation who found a workaround to this issue?

If you haven't already, it seems you need to request ETF trading permissions

To request ETF trading permissions, login to Client Portal/Account Management and select permissions for Stocks. Some ETFs may also require permissions for Complex or Leveraged Exchange Traded Products.
