Help with Learning Market Mechanics

Recommended Posts

EricKoeller

I’m looking for some learning resources that can give me a broad understanding how the market works mechanically. Not necessarily what causes the price to go up and down, but what happens with orders, exchanges and the like. When reading about trading, I’m thrown off about some of the basic things about how the market actually functions, and many of the books that I read assume I already know this Information.

What actually happens when I hit buy? Whats actually happening when orders get filled? It buys orders at the price I selected, and if those shares aren’t available, gets them at the next lowest price, right? Then you have things like Bid-Ask spreads, dark pools, ARCA and other exchanges. How do Market Makers play into all of this?

Note, I’m not asking people here to explain or answer the questions, but rather I’m asking if someone could recommend a book or website (besides Investopedia) or something that can help me learn these types of things. I’ve been able to garner some info here and there from investopedia and other places, but I’m moreso looking for a book or some kind of primer that give me a complete overview of how the market works. Thank you!
