3 Months Sim Trading | MY STATS

Recommended Posts

Robbie Williams

Hi everyone,

I finished up my first 3 months of sim training last Friday. I've learn at lot during that time and have been writing down every trade to analyse my results and see what does and what doesn't work for me. I have decided that I will do at least another 3 months in the simulator - I am wanting to be super confident and proficient at trading as eventually I would like to quit my day job, however there is no rush for me to do so and I have a lot of things that I would like to fix before trading real money. Having the data has allowed me to figure out what I need to work on to be successful moving forward.

I have uploaded my data as an infogram (I love infographics and enjoyed making this in Photoshop) in the hope that you'll find it entertaining and some new traders might learn something.

wow Robbie, that is an excellent info. Did you make it yourself? Or a service website provided it for you?

Robbie, this is incredible! All the effort in tracking statistics does pay off in the end. I hope this inspires other traders to journal religiously and analyze the data to find out what works best for them. Great job!

Did you trade everyday? I took 375 trades in 57 days of simulator. That's nearly twice as much as you lol.

Wow. That's amazing Robbie. Thank you for sharing. Would you mind sharing how you structured your trading journal? I found myself going into the Account Report section in DAS Trader but it only gave me the total per stock and not the breakdown for each trade.

Hey everyone, to answer all your questions:

Andrew :: I made it myself in Photoshop and made the bar charts up in excel and copied them across. I did use some elements from online “infographic creator” websites and then cut and pasted them into my Photoshop image to come up with the final result. (If you need any design work for BB traders in the future, let me know and I'll see if I can help you out).

Abiel + Robert H :: I think I traded around about 58 days or so - I lost some when I was working, too tired or public holidays when the market was closed.

Rayayeung :: To track trades I think Carlos recommended OneNote in another forum post so I started using that to track trades. I find it super easy and syncs across all devices. A screenshot of one page (one day) worth of my journal:

I also put every single trade (I missed a few because I got confused with entry and exit of some trades so not 100% exact) in an excel spreadsheet:

As you can see above I didn't have many winners initially and my losses were way bigger than my winners. I am not afraid to admit this because I am now ACUTELY aware of this, and that I need to work on my profit and losses and only look for high quality setups from now on, and because of this data, it has allowed me the insight to work on this religiously from now on. As you can see, I haven't been tracking my profit ratio which is probably why I have suffered with my profit vs losses over this period so I will be doing this from now on, despite being tedious. Remember that this isn't a hobby, its basically a job so initially, you need to write down what does and does not work for you.

Robert H suggested also tracking the profit target you're hoping to get and what you actually get which is what I will be doing from now on. This is definitely what has been letting me down, with losing trades costing as much as the profit I'm banking on winning trades.

Also note that my average win and loss per trade are quite low, around $40 - this is because I have been taking very small share sizes -100 shares normally but 200, 300 and sometimes 400 - this is what share size I will be going live with. I do not feel there is a point in taking 1000 shares in the sim and making $1000 profit, and then when it comes time to go live only taking 100 shares as you're just cheating yourself. I'm trying to make the simulator as REAL as what i'm going to do when I actually go live.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask, I'd love to help if I can :)

I forgot that you only trade the first hour due to the time difference. That would explain why you had much less trades.

You inspired me to analyze my own stats and present them graphically. Thanks for the idea and keep up the great work, Robbie!

Hi Arnaud, I don't have my computer on me for the next couple of days as I'm off to Los Angeles but I can let you know the column headers I use

It's then a matter of just writing each trade down in a separate row.

COLUMNS:

DATE

TIME OF DAY

TICKER/NAME

PRICE

STRATEGY

LONG OR SHORT

SHARE SIZE

EXPECTED PROFIT

EXPECTED STOP LOSS

ACTUAL STOP LOSS

ACTUAL PROFIT/LOSS

LOW FLOAT? YES OR NO

A lot of information to write down. What I normally do is write this on a piece of paper with a pen and then transcribe it into my journal after I have finished trading for the day.

Will send through my excel spreadsheet when I'm back on Monday morning

Hi Everyone,

I took a 1 year off work to learn how to day trade and have created a blog which contains videos of all my recaps (both good and bad!).

http://daytradearcade.com

Also, I created a free journal where you just paste your data from DAS and it calculates all the most important stats. Took me 3 months to create using some programming help on-line. I'm happy to share it if interested -be good to get some feedback!

Hey Bart that's amazing - I'll have to look through all your recaps. I always learn from all you guys posting journals and trades.

I'd love to get a copy of your journalling program/spreadsheet to check it out - that would be great :) my email is [email protected]

Hi Robbie,

No worries, let me make a couple of updates and I should have it ready by end of the week. Just adding in some strategies and simplifying it.
