Looking for coding buddy to develop code for alerts using the IB API

Recommended Posts

Nir

Hello,

I started using the IB python API and started developing code for real time alerts. I have found that patterns that I look for can happen and sometimes I miss them because it is just too hard too watch many symbols simultaniously.

For sure it can increase the opportunities. So if someone sees that and want to join with me to this journey I would be happy for a coding buddy.

If someone has ideas and want to contact me it would be nice too.

Anyway I will post the progress here soon and hopefully it will attract some of you.

Best regards,

Nir.

Nir,

I have played around with IB python api but didn't get very far so I doubt I would be of much help.  But there is a yahoo group devoted to IB API,  all flavors, and you might find someone there.

Hello David,

Thank you for the link of the API group, I didn't know about it and I will check it out.

If I may ask, what stopped you from making a progress ?

Best regards,

Nir

My reason for coding was to create a better front end for trading futures on IB as the native platform is really Bad I then found this  on youtube

But it was too clunky to use.  When IB came out with their own Python API I tried to convert it but failed. In the end I purchased Bracket Trader which works just fine.

I never got involved in auto trading and algos if you are interested in that I would suggest you check out the site below. It too uses IbPy and not IB Python API and is way over my head.

Here on his web site there are webinars of his programs and strategies.   https://aroussi.com

hope this helps and keep me up to date with your progress.

That was a really big project to take. for sure.

I am actually not interested at this stage in auto-trading/algos, I just want to get alerts for the type of setups that I am looking for, the final decision I still want to make after reviewing.

examples of these setups:

1. engulfing (crack - as Andrew likes to call it) at the open. it can be 1/2/5 minutes engulfing.

2. hammer/shooting-star with larger volume than the average or the last few bars. maybe after few red bars.

3. trading above or below the 9 ema for about half an hour (strong trend), want to take it at the first bump to the 20 ema for continuation.

etc...

Thank you David for the answers, I will keep you posted when I have some progress.

I am now at the first learning curve building the data collector for many stocks at the same time (historical or real time).

Best regards,

Nir.

I totally get wanting to build it out yourself - because it's free and satisfying. But maybe look into back testing those strategies with Trade Ideas before putting the time investment in? Good timing as they just started another 2 week trial period.

Hi Justin,

I had Trade Ideas few months ago and I remember trying a hammer candle (for example) alert and couldn't get it to work reliably.

Some features work great in TI and some really not...

I just want more flexibility.

For example, engulfing can be when the current candle engulfs 80% of the last one and not 100%.

Of course these alerts will not make the final decision to take a trade I will need to look at the chart/ level 2 / volume/spy etc... But hopefully it will open more opportunities for trades.

Best Regards,

Nir.
