Day Trading Canadian Taxes and Business Structures
k1l0d3lta replied to Palashe's topic in Risk, Account & Money Management
If you want to trade as a corporation, the brokerage account (IBKR or any other broker) needs to be under the business entity, not you as an individual. Not sure about DAS subscription, since I don't use DAS for my business account - I use Trader Workstation directly to trade on that account. Hope this helps. -
Day Trading Canadian Taxes and Business Structures

Hi All, Seeking some help on this old, but very informative thread! Can anyone here recommend a tax accountant that they have worked with (anywhere in Canada), and had good experience with? Doesn't matter whether you used their services for filing as a self-employed individual or a corporation doing day trading. I am just looking for someone with prior experience working with day traders. Thanks! -
Hi There, I am wondering if there are any Canadians here in the community that do active day and/or swing trading as a business? I am in the same boat, and am looking for recommendations on an accountant who has experience with day trading business taxes. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Everyone, I was wondering if someone can recommend an accounting firm based out of Canada who has experience with day traders (preferably someone that you have worked with, and had good experience). I trade as a business entity in Canada, and am looking for a firm that can do accounting, year end returns etc. I saw the Green Trader Tax firm being recommended earlier in this thread, but doesn't seem like they work with Canadian taxes. Thanks.

Thanks Palashe for all that info! Funny I watched the same video right after I looked up this thread, and didn't look for the information I was seeking! For now, I am in a similar boat as you. I am fairly new to trading, and am doing it for a couple of hours in the morning before I start my day job. But would like to eventually convert this to my main profession once I get more consistent. Sounds like for now I would just continue to file whatever gains I made as personal income tax, and think of incorporating this as a business. Also, am new to Canada. Just moved here couple of months ago from US, so haven't filed any taxes in Canada yet. -

Looking for the same info, would really appreciate if someone can share their experience / thoughts about the above questions. Also, did you have to pick a 'professional' account type when opening an account with your broker if you are trading as a business entity(e.g. IB makes you select account type as 'personal' or 'professional')?
