Historical Data Trading Simulator

Has anyone looked into simulators using historical data? DAS is invaluable for real-time but I'm looking to increase my reps as much as possible.

My initial research showed the following:

Hi Rich - I have a yearly subscription which I bought to tradingsim.com. To be honest however, I have used it once. I find that it isn’t as valuable as the DAS sim as it doesn’t have pre-market data and hence you’re not able to see what the stock was doing right before open. 

I also find that the VWAP doesn’t show correctly (or to be more precise, the same as DAS) until about 10 minutes after market open due to the fact that it doesn’t show pre-market data.

Dont get me wrong, I think it’s a fantastic tool however. I though I’d just let you know some of the limitations I’ve seen before you spend $$$ on it. 

(No idea if we have a BBT discount with them. I don’t beIieve so)

I have found tradingsim.com to be valuable, I get two trading days in every evening after work. They are currently in the process of adding the pre-market data.  One downfall is that there is no level 2, I'm hoping they will add that at some point.

So I'm looking at trying TradingSim, but if anyone has used it, question: How do you find the stocks in play for any given day? Like I pick some random day in the past to try trading, how do I know what stocks to trade that day?

You can access the chat history which contains Andrew's, Brian's, Carlos, etc. watch list.

Tradingsim also shows the biggest $ and % movers on the day (not necessarily same criteria as out Gappers).

You may want to look at  TradingView.com.  They have a 30 day free trial right now and cost is $ 9.95 for the Basic Plan or $ 19.95 for the Pro Plan, per month (USD). Here's a you tube clip of it in use ( presenter is a little annoying but you'll get the point).

Why not to use ThinkOrSwim OnDemand feature? I have been using this for over a year now to test all my strategies for day and swing trading. You can send yourself in any day in the past (excluding last 2 trading days), and trade any stock you want. You have to open an account with TD AmeriTrade though, no need to deposit any money

Aznari - Can you short stocks with ThinkorSwim OnDemand? I actually installed ThinkorSwim today, but I found somewhere in their documentation that you can't short stocks with OnDemand - unless that is old information. Please let us know. 

I also tried tradingsim.com but I found the web interface to be... awkward. I guess I may use it as a last resort, but I'd prefer not to. 

Ninja Trader - well I've installed that and dabbled with it, but haven't gotten it working yet - that's another complex story.

So update - I'm still working on trying to configure Ninja Trader - with a paid Kinetix data subscription, you CAN get historical data into Ninja Trader and go short and long - and do a "real time" simulation. However, Ninja Trader is a real pain in the ass to set up as compared to DAS, DAS seems like a much better piece of software. 

I emailed DAS to see if they could do historical data simulation, and they said they are actually working on it and hoping to have it done by the end of May 2019...

Looks like you got farther on Ninjatrader than I did. They were never able to fix the issue that it was unable to connect data with my paid E-Signal account. I finally gave up after many hours with each companies IT and cancelled my E-Signal.

Yeah you need to use Kinetick with Ninja Trader to get historical data - the paid kinetick subscription that is. Once you get that though, it does replay just like "live" data. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to get it to show 9 and 20 EMA, and 50 and 200 SMA. Ninja Trader has this moving average "ribbons" that show a ton of lines... I don't want that crap. I just want my 4 lines that represent the above, and that's it. I'll keep this thread posted of my progress. 

Hopefully DAS gets this up and running soon so that I won't have to use Ninja Trader for long.

Update: So I've figured everything out with Ninja Trader. Had to buy a $150 plugin to get VWAP, but I got the 9 and 20 EMA, and the 50 and 200 SMA lines along with the previous day close line up. The hotkeys in NT aren't nearly as good as DAS, but it's better than nothing for retro "live" trading... still I can't wait until DAS gets that featrure to practice retro trading.
