How to calculate commissions?

Recommended Posts

zmichael855

Been trading in the simulator and trying to calculate what I would be paying in commissions.  Can someone show me how to calculate the commission for buying 40 shares of $100 price?  The commission should be the same when selling right?  Which of the regulatory fees shown below would apply to me?  Thanks in advance.

It's not that simple, there's too many variables.

It would be the minimum per trade then fees depends on how you trade (market vs limit orders) and what stocks you trade, it's not as simple as saying a $100 stock. As you can see there's a lot of exchanges there and we let them fill on the exchange to get the best fill rather than specifying an exchange and so fees will vary and we accept that because the fill is more important.

Interesting, so ballpark what would you expect to pay in commissions for 40 shares of $100?

I don't know because I don't trade 40 shares but most of the time the bulk of your cost will be the minimum (35c if you're on tiered). I don't pay attention to comms because it's so small % wise for me (not trading 5 shares and not scalping for 2 ticks for example) but flicked through a couple of my reports and it looks like I do get some outliers where comms are as high as double. So for arguments sake you're probably around 35c-50c a lot of the time but around $1 sometimes (one way).

As I said that is a small sample size because it's so small I don't pay attention to it and is obviously based on the types of stocks I trade (which are very liquid stocks such as TSLA or AMD which impacts comms)

Ok, thank you, that helps to get an idea of how much commissions are.
