How to determine ATR when trading Aiman's breakouts

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm a new BBT member and just started trading in simulator. I'm practicing breakout strategy Aiman taught in his webinars. He pays a lot attention to ATR, but I am a bit confused about how he determines ATR value. In his webinars, he doesn't seem to simply use the latest value of ATR, but takes the value at which ATR plateaus in a period of time. For example, in the attached screenshot, the most recent ATR of INTC is $1.46 which spiked on 7/23, but its value has been around $1.15 for a while recently. My question is when applying Aiman's breakout strategy, should I use ATR value of $1.46 or $1.15? I'd appreciate it very much if anyone could clarify a bit on this topic.

Thank you very much in advance! You guys are awesome!

Kabakhu,

I use the current value on the right and it works very well for me.

I then compare that value of the ATR (14) indicator to the ATR (1) indicator to see if there is "still room to run" on the stock.

Thank you very much, Bailey and Peter! This is exactly what I'm looking for, so the consensus here is to use the latest value of $1.46. I'll do that in my future trading. 👍

I use the last value as well, and it works for me as a profit goal.
