M1-MacMini + DAS

Recommended Posts

Srikanth

Hi all, have just joined a LT member. I am happy to part of the community.

I am a Mac user and i recently upgraded to M1-MacMini. I want to instal DASTrader on to this, but realize that i have couple of issues. Does any have any experience or comments on

1) How is the overall experience of DAS in Mac

2) Which virtualization program suits better ( Parallel or VM Ware Fusion or any other?)

3) Any experience with new M1-based Mac hardware..i.e Does all functionalities / features of DAS work?

4) Any thoughts on what I should be careful while using?

I really want to stick to my Mac OS and not change to Windows....Really apreciate any advice from you on how I can try and get the best out of what I have..

Thanks

Sri

Tried for a while Parallels. Overall works well but the Standard version (one off price) limit the use of RAM and it makes the use of DAS poor if you want to use other applications simultaneously (i.e. video recording). Moved to Bootcamp partition. Love it!

generally there is not much you can do with your current HW

1. DAS is only for Windows as you already know. no bootcamp of windows on M1 macs

2. there is still not any stable release for M1 macs but Parallels used to have much better peroformance than vmware fusion. there is a tech preview for parallels for M1 but nothing yet from vmware

3. see above

4. you just have to wait or try the tech preview or run a windows VM on a different computer or the whole DAS on different computer.
there are several options how to run the trading VM

on premise on some storage appliance or older PC - unraid or synology or qnap or freenas if you happen to have one of these technologies at home

in cloud with monthly payments

Hi Peter, Thanks for the input. As per your thoughts, tal Parallel 16 (new for M1) + Windows 10 (insider)-Beta with DAS. It was working but the experience was not so nice. Am not sure if it is due to Parallel or Windows Beta issues. Anyway its my first day to feel DA. Was just playing around as my IBKR account linkage is not up yet. Will try again...It will be a pity if this does not work..I may have to give up DAS as I do not have Win PC..Hope it works out..

Hi Peter, Thanks..You are totally right. DAS does consume a lot of RAM. Could not do anything else.Unfortunately, new M1 does not support Boot camp. Have no choice but to rely on one of the two virtual machine bridge. Anyway thanks a lot. Will keep trying out.

DAS only uses 25 megs of RAM on my BIG computer... It also runs just fine on my 10 year old laptop with an i5... Both are pc's on windows 10. The requirements are VERY low for DAS, so you could go and get a really cheap PC computer for DAS only if you can't get it going on your mac. https://dastrader.com/docs/hardware-requirements/

I recently upgraded my Mac, but I had to choose to get an Intel Mac over an M1 simply because of the former's ability to run Bootcamp and Windows, and entirely so I could run DAS without a problem. I wish DAS would release a Mac version, seems bonkers that they don't given quite a few people (like me!) run DAS on a windows enabled Mac.

Thanks Adam..Was too much carried away by the performance metrics of M1. Wish DAS launch a Mac version...Will play around with the Parallels...Lets see..Thanks

Yes... I'd have loved to get an M1! They look just insanely good. But doesn't matter how good the computer is, if it doesn't run the programmes I need then I might as well buy a typewriter for all the good it's worth.

Absolutely...I am really waiting for the final version of Windows 10 for ARM. Thats the the last resort for me to still lug around with Mac. By the way, today I tried using Paralleles by exiting coherence mode. The isolated windows mode seem to make the operations much smoother..Hope my IBKR account gets activated today to try out live trading..

Tried live trading with M1-Mac mini + Windows 10 Arm (Insider) + Parallels 16 + DAS. It worked well. Did not face any latency. Allocated about 4GB RAM and stayed with the recommended 2core. It worked better after I exited coherence mode which means I lost out on having parallel Mac -based operations. Anyway, this is like boot camp mode. Independently, I also tried to load the native IBKT - TWS just to test the limit when in coherence mode. I had to increase the RAM for TWS to nearly 8GB. The operation was not smooth.

Will try for some time during the trial period and decide. Thank you all for your inputs!
