Interest in Swing Trading

Recommended Posts

sawtooth500

Hi Guys,

I'm currently day trading in the sim (thanks Andrew for setting all of this up!)

In addition to learning day trading, I've also been doing swing trading for the last 2 months. Unfortunately, I haven't been profitable there.

I have a strategy, and I actually own a web development company so I had my programmers write custom code to backtest the strategy and per the backtesting annualized returns of about 20%-40% are possible.

However, this backtesting doesn't translate to a solid investment strategy - to actually invest, I need to have stop loss plans, risk management, I only have a limited amount of money so I need to pick and choose what positions I get into or don't get into (instead of getting into EVERYTHING like my backtesting strategy assumes), and yeah that's where it all falls apart. I basically don't have any experience here.

If anybody here has experience and has been profitable with swing trading, and if you have an interest in what I came up, please let me know. I'd need to email you some spreadsheets with the backtesting results and then take about 10-15 minutes on the phone to explain the details of everything.

We had a swing trading subforum, but it was removed due to low activity. Brian Pez in the chat is an avid swinger. Wouldn't hurt to reach out to him.

I'd definitely be interesting in a group like this! I posted on the old board and didn't get any responses, but I'd love to discuss the how people screen for swing trades, timing, etc.

One of the things I have been doing is researching swing trades toward the long side, but then day trading within those stocks which I think are good growth candidates. So, I will trade according to the minute charts - say when a strong stock is at a low level below VWAP - and then hold until my profits are made or if I get stopped out on a daily/monthly chart.

Some of the stocks that seem like alphas right now that I'm looking to trade long next week are:

MOMO

MU

TJX

BR

EL

All of these have been profitable despite the market index pullback. Thus they are "alphas" to my eyes.

Anyone have any recommendations for swing trade chatrooms or resources?

I swing trade alot, with stocks and with options.

I'm pretty sure that you did your backtesting wrong.

Sorry to be so hard on saying that, but you can't backtest a strategy for a very big period of time, you need to backtest for only a limited period (2 years) and then do forward testing with a random period of for example a year.

If you don't do it this way then your strategy will be optimised for the past and not the future, I have lots of experience in this matter.

If anybody is setting anything up let me know.

Good luck.
